How it works

For those of you who have never done a Mountain Bike Relay before here's a brief outline

  • 12 hour teams ride from 10am - 10pm
  • 6 hour teams ride from 3pm - 9pm - so just one rider will need lights
  • One lap of the main course is figure of 8 loop of about 6 km.
  • Only one rider from each team goes round the course at any one time
  • Each team gets 2 Race numbers, and teams members swap numbers
  • Each team is allocated a 4 x 4m ‘tent site' the village, the course goes past every tent.
  • Riders in each team ‘change' over at their tent site
  • The rider on the course wears a timing transponder which they pass onto their next rider when they have completed their lap / laps
  • The idea is to complete as many laps as possible in the 6 / 12 hours, the teams in each category who do the most laps WIN!!
  • There is the possibility of knocking time off your laps by partaking in some wacky challenges - announced on the day.
You did an awesome job first time out guys, well done. The terrain is far more interesting than Taupo & Rotorua in my opinion. We'll be back and with more people next year! - Anonymous, 2007

The course

In response to requests the course maps can be downloaded.  South track,  north track

Tents

Teams pitch their tent / marquee the night before race day, between 4.45pm - 8.30pm, - there will be a security guard over night on Fri night in the velodrome.

At your tent site you can set up gas cookers, chairs, cocktail cabinets, even decorate the tent - and be in to win the 'Best Themed Tent Site' award .
Basically the tent village becomes a very social hub, for relaxing, chatting to mates, cheering on your team and all the others.

Course

Its a figure of 8 loop that is fast, fun and undulating.
Heaps of variety, including cruisy good downhills, neat single track as well as wider 4WD track for overtaking.

Race Numbers and timing

* Participants will be given 2 race numbers, one of which must be on the front of the bike of the rider going around the course, the other on the next rider waiting, riders swap numbers between team members.
* All teams will be given a ‘transponder, which has to be passed between riders at changeover.
* Transponders MUST be returned at the end of the race, teams not handing theirs in will be fined $50.
